OKONKWO AS A: TRAGIC HERO Aristotle once said â€Å"A man doesn’t become a hero until he can see the root of his downfall.† The protagonist of the book â€Å"Things Fall Apart† by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo demonstrates characteristics of being an Aristotelian tragic hero. According to Aristotle, a Tragic Hero is one who exhibits a tragic flaw that causes a reversal of fortune to him in his own error of judgment. Okonkwo is a leader and a hardworking member of the Igbo tribe of the village of Umofia whose tragic flaw is his immense fear of appearing emotionally weak in his community. Achebe introduces Okonkwo to us as a self-established and hardworking man. After the death of his carefree and indolent father, who left him with undue debt he took†¦show more content†¦And, indeed, Ikemefuna called him father.† (Pg. 28) The narrator uses the word ‘inwardly’ to express Okonkwo’s growing affection towards Ikemefuna. Ikemefuna possesses manly values that force Okonkwo to be fond of him and even though he rarely shows aspects of love and intimacy as he considers them feminine, there is a special relationship the two have. Such fondness for Ikemefuna could end up as him being Okonkwo’s but that is not quite what happens. When the village elder Ogbuefi Ezeudu pays Okonkwo a visit and reveals to him that the oracle has proclaimed for Ikemefuna to be killed, he also advices Okonkwo not to take part in the killing of the boy as he calls Okonkwo â€Å"father†. Regardless of how much Okonkwo liked Ikemefuna, he does not once, question the oracle and takes out his machete and kills Ikemefuna, as he’s afraid of being thought of as weak and fixated with emotions: â€Å"He heard Ikemefuna cry, â€Å"My father, they have killed me† as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. In the medical set up, there are three types of racism which are; the perspective of color blindness, denial and aversive racism. There are times that nurses do not intend to be racists but they do it anyway. Nurses and everyone in this field view nursing profession as being based on care and empathy. The Canada Act By 1980 the constitution was no longer as well suited for the country of Canada. Changes were needed to be made in the constitution which had not been touched over the last 113 years. The Prime Minister wanted to secure a bill of rights in the constitution but also wanted to patriate the BNA Act. This meant to bring the act from British hands into Canadian control. In 1931 an earlier attempt had been made to patriate the BNA Act. At the time British Parliament had just recently passed the Statute of Westminster, which gave all dominions under British influence complete independence and no longer held them to British Law. This law also applied to Canada but not including the BNA Act. This occurred because the Federal and Provincial governments could not agree on a way of revising the act. The Provincial Government rather liked this agreement because it kept the federal government from going out and acting on its own and violating provincial rights. The question of amending the BNA Act was discussed many times after 1931. In 1971 in Victoria an agreement was almost made. The provinces were given 10 days to go over the proposals made in Victoria but Quebec did not agree and it was all scrapped leaving them at square one once again. Ontario and New Brunswick's input on the changes in the constitution/BNA Act: - free to carry on business throughout the country - should not be restricted by provincial rules on trade - one parliament ruling Canada - manage economic power to distribute wealth easily - provincial wealth should be distributed throughout Other provinces, (mainly Quebec), input on the changes in the constitution/BNA Act: - provincial communities are equally important to Canadians as was the nation provincial governments should better understand the needs of the people - Ottawa was not the only voice for Canada - provinces wanted more power in federal policies that concerned provincial matters In September 1980 another federal - provincial conference was held to discuss amending the BNA Act once again. Unfortunately there were two conflicting views at these meetings. The Prime Minister, Trudeau, took on the view that we were all "Canadians" - not French or English, not Westerners or Easterners. Trudeau thought that Canadians would do best to have all the same freedoms across the country. He wanted to focus on breaking down the provincial barriers and unify Canadians as citizens. October 2, 1980, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that he was going to patriate the constitution on the federal initiative alone. This statement did not go over well with the provinces. The supreme court was consulted on wether this was legal and some changes were made after it was declared legal but a huge break in the traditional methods of doing things. During October and November 1981, last minute negotiations and changes were made and finally an agreement was reached between Ottawa and nine of the provinces on a constitutional package. Of course the disagreeing province was Quebec who refused to go along with the agreement because Quebec had not been given Veto power over amendments. Still the proposals were passed and in March 1982 the British Parliament gave its approval to the newly proposed constitution act. The New Constitution Act included amendments made over the years to the BNA Act. But there were additions that would have effect on the federal system of the future. The new act focuses on strengthening provincial government control over natural resources, defines the principle of equalization which intends to guarantee all Canadians will have access to basic public services no matter where they live. The rights also included protection of both French and English language rights. In a separate section the existing Native rights are also protected. The changes in the BNA Act and Canadas constitution follow in suite to the changing times. The changes made for this day and age may no longer be applicable 50 years from now and once again the act will be reviewed and probably renegotiated.

How Might Deprivation Lead to Crime - Essay Example In these models, deprivation leads to crime by placing low-income individuals who have low returns from market activity in proximity to high-income individuals who have things that are worth taking. A formal model of deprivation and property crime in which individuals choose between legitimate and criminal activity can be found in Chiu and Madden (1998, p123-141). Sampson (1987) has added family stability to this list. For social disorganization theory, deprivation causes crime indirectly by being associated with poverty. In my leisure time I enjoy having a long drink and a bowl of popcorn watching a nice film.   I do not favor any category of film.   I normally read a review of a film and see what evaluation it had been given by the reviewer.   Although I have some favorite actors, like for example Robert De Niro in the films ‘The Awakening’, ‘Sleepers’, and ‘Meet the Fockers’, Al Pacino in the films ‘Devils Advocate’, and ‘Carlito’s Way’, and George Clooney in the films ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ and ‘The Perfect Storm’. A recent film that comes to my mind is Pursuit of Happyness.   It attracted me most for its comparisons to the daily routine.   In fact it is based on a true story of Chris Gardner.   To be sincere I do not really fancy so much the main actor of this film whom character is played by Will Smith, but he really has done his best to play such an excellent role.   While the boy in the film, who is also the real son of Will Smith manages to play an impeccable role in the film.   The story is about a salesman who is trying to sell medical scanners with no luck at all. While he possesses minimal money and the only breadwinner of the family is his wife, who is panic stricken on how to continue paying the house rents they have with insufficient income. The last straw that broke the camels’ back was when ‘Chris’ told his wife that he was inclined for the profession of a stockbroker.   As a result, she left home and allowed Chris to take the full custody of his son. In such a stance, Chris had to study to attain the job as a stockbroker, while trying to provide shelter for his son.   This part of the film revels the great commitment that Chris Gardner had for his family and for the job that he was inspired to reach. A story like this induces me to look at the bright sight of any situation and to be realistic in any condition in my life. Will Smith shows this entirely on how he keeps a smile on his face knowing the severe circumstances just to give hope and love for his son.   Knowing that these are real events from the daily routine of Chris Gardner, he managed to protect his son from the daily darkness, random misfortunes and homelessness. Even though I am watching a film I try to get a good source of education or knowledge or loving depending on the film.   For example through ‘Last King of Scotland’ I noted the hardships that people in Uganda suffered during the reign of General Idi Amin.   The braveness and courage of William Wallace in the film ‘Braveheart’ provided me good historical insights of Scotland during that epoch. Being a movie admirer I am always keen to watch a good film at the Cinema first.   I usually prefer a quite theater, with no disturbances from other spectators, which will hinder my attention on the film.   I also follow the Oscar Nominations and Awards thoroughly.   Indeed it is customary for me to watch all the movies in a cinema that were nominated to an Oscar.   I always try to match who will be the Best Actor, Director, Actress and Film before the award ceremony. While both of my stories explore how afflicted love traumatizes the psyche and seem to agree that love poses the greatest dilemma in life, and at the same time that it’s the most valued prospect of life, the two stories differ in that frustrated familial love causes Gaitskill's protagonist to become understandable and consequently evokes sympathy from the reader, but on the other hand frustrated romantic love does nothin g for Carver's Protagonist, except keep him disconnected from his wife and leaving him unchanged, remaining static as a character and overall unlikable.
